Namibia

Namibia is strengthening its ocean governance through a coordinated approach that brings together marine spatial planning, ecosystem management, and blue economy development. The country has adopted marine spatial planning as a national tool to guide how ocean space is used across sectors, ensuring that economic activities, conservation priorities, and ecosystem health are managed in an integrated and participatory way.

This approach is supported by a national Sustainable Blue Economy Policy, which aligns fisheries, energy, transport, conservation, and emerging ocean industries under a unified governance framework. The policy aims to balance economic development with environmental sustainability while strengthening coordination across institutions and sectors.

Namibia’s role within the Benguela Current system one of the most productive marine ecosystems globally further positions the country as a key player in regional ocean governance, working alongside Angola and South Africa to manage shared resources, biodiversity, and environmental risks.

As the Great Blue Wall expands its vision across Africa, we are working with Namibia on the BBNJ Agreement project as Namibia offers a strong foundation for advancing integrated, science-based ocean management and aligning ecosystem health with long-term economic resilience
