We are a transformative and dynamic movement originating from the Global South, spearheading a holistic approach to coastal and ocean conservation, regeneration, and socio-ecological resilience and regenerative blue economic development.

Goal and objectives
The Great Blue Wall is a Western Indian Ocean (WIO)-born ocean roadmap, driven by the Global South, to achieve a nature and people positive ocean action agenda by 2030. It aims at unlocking the potential of nature-based solutions through the establishment of a transformational movement. Its goal is to accelerate and upscale ocean actions that will enhance socio-ecological resilience and develop a regenerative blue economy while catalysing political leadership and financial support.
This will be achieved by spearheading the establishment of a connected network of regenerative seascapes. This network of seascapes will be connected by a living blue wall that will act as a regional ecological corridor formed by conserved and restored critical blue ecosystems such as mangroves, seagrasses, corals and coastal forests. While the Great Blue Wall will act as a wall against climate change impacts and biodiversity loss, it will also protect coastal communities, their culture and livelihoods, and create the enabling conditions and necessary mechanisms to accelerate the development of a regenerative blue economy
The Regenerative Framework
To guide its development and implementation in order to achieve its goals, the Great Blue Wall is based on the premises of the Regenerative Framework, composed of three key pillars and one transversal: Blue Planet, Blue Nature, Blue People and Blue Partnerships
Our Geographies
GBW works across East Africa and the Western Indian Ocean—spanning Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Madagascar, Seychelles, Mauritius, and Comoros—where communities, governments, and partners unite to restore mangroves, coral reefs, and seagrass, strengthen locally managed marine areas, reduce plastic waste, and improve coastal livelihoods through sustainable blue economy practice
